Many in the religious world believe that Christ is returning some day to set up His earthly kingdom.  The old testament  prophecies concerning Christ will not allow such a conclusion.  

In Zechariah 6: 12-13 we read: "Behold the man whose name is THE BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the Lord:  Even he shall build the temple of the Lord; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne:  and the counsel of peace shall be between them both."  

If Christ's reign upon His throne has been postponed until a later date, then clearly the Lord's work as priest has been delayed as well. That would mean that we today have NO HIGH PRIEST functioning on our behalf.  If no priest, then  no forgiveness (Hebrews 7: 22 – 28)!
