Once upon a time, there was Sister Red Hen who scratched around and uncovered a seed. It was the Word of God. (Luke 8:11) She called her brethren in the congregation where she attended and said to them, "If we work together with God and plant this seed, we will have a great harvest of souls here at West Side. Who will help me plant the seed?"
"Not I," said Brother Duck.
"Not I," said Sister Goose."Well then I will," said Sister Red Hen, and she did!
The Word of God was sown by Sister Red Hen and it grew tall and ripened into a golden harvest of human souls. She continued to sow and again she asked,"Who will help me reap for indeed 'the harvest is plenteous and the labourers are few'."
"Not I," said Brother Duck.
"Out of my league," said Brother Pig.
"We'd have to give up our bridge and golf game to have the time," said Brother and Sister Cow.
"I just don't know how, and besides I would never be good at it anyway," said Sister Goose.
Then harvest time came again. "'Who will help?"asked Sister Red Hen who was very busy by now with all the work.
"That is overtime for me. I can't spare the time," said Sister Cow.
"I never learned how. Besides, there are others more qualified than me," said Brother Duck.
"My favorite TV show is coming on. I couldn't miss it," said Brother Pig.
"Why are you always asking me to do so much?" said Sister Goose.
"Then I will," said Sister Red Hen not wishing to inconvenience anyone. And she did.
She sowed the seed and reaped the final harvest in the Day of Judgment. "He that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may REJOICE together (John 4:36)."
But for the rest there was no rejoicing!
"Not I," said Sister Goose.
